About Us
WE ARE DANCE/CULTURAL ARTS KEEPERS
AZTLAN
Aztlan is the mythical homeland of our Native American ancestors. Aztlan is considered the stretch of North America that spans from Alaska along the U.S. Pacific coast, through Colorado and Texas, to the Valley of Mexico. The indigenous peoples of this region once shared a common language and cultural beliefs. Aztlan symbolizes the cultural identity and heritage of Indigenous Native people of the U.S. Southwest and Mexico.
Our History
Founded in 1974, the AZTLAN Dance Company has enriched audiences through annual theatrical dance production seasons and creative cultural workshops. The AZTLAN Dance Company is guided by its unwavering mission to establish a stable and conducive environment for creating, preserving, and presenting dance that reflects and inspires the communities in which we work. Through our creative work, AZTLAN promotes greater intercultural and cross-generational understanding and appreciation of Indo/Xicano/Latino dance arts. AZTLAN creates dance that imagines a future informed by the past.
Our Work
Dazzling audiences in Austin and around the world, the AZTLAN Dance Company is fearless in creating bold innovative dance works that challenge tradition(s), thus expanding theatrical space to narrate our cultural experiences and expressive realities. Whether presenting traditional pieces or the exciting AZTLAN New Works dance repertory, the AZTLAN Dance Company is committed to promoting cultural understanding and celebrating American cultural diversity.
